Russia + Eastern Europe

Under Vladimir Putin, Russia is seeking to regain its global status, with its oil as a major bargaining chip. It is engaged in a struggle for influence in Eastern Europe, seeing some countries joining the European Union and others, like Ukraine, going their own way. The United States counts on Moscow's co-operation in the fight against terrorism, and China wants both oil and arms.
